    1. Short, quick read. Heartbreaking, yet realistic, story with a less realistic, but impactful, twist. Creativity done.

    2. "I know I'm tired of thinking about what I should have done yesterday. I know I'm just tired. If I knew what to do with my life, how to fix it up, I would have done it a long time ago. You can't dig that? You think I want to live like I'm somebody's throwaway?" —Lil J, Dope Sick, P. 46 If I said that Dope Sick is primarily a conversation (albeit an intense one) between two guys from the inner city holed up in a tiny abandoned apartment, one of the guys having been shot in the arm by an underco [...]

Lil' J losses all control of his life and decisions, thus dropping out of school and doing drugs from time to time. He becomes friends with a gang member named Rico. 9. James Welch English 89/14/14Over the summer I read one of the many books I read was Dope Sick by Walter Dean Myers. Dope Sick is an action packed story told by the main character Lil J a late teen from a troubled area in NYC. For Lil J’s whole life he has been caught in a bad crowd. He has never been a bad person thats just who he has gravitated to. One day it catches up with him, his drug deal goes south and policeman gets shot. He quickly needs to find a place to hide and he locates an aband [...]

    10. The thing that I liked about the book, was the fact that it captured my attention. The way he writes, it's like if your their. Walter gives you that good visual description on what is going on. This was a good book because i could relate to the story, Some of these things do happen in real life and its just a good book. One good quote that Lil J said was " to give it, you got to live it". I don't know why I liked this but it made me think, how can you give someone something when you haven't live [...]

    11. A swift, pleasant read; Dope Sick is the story of how one boy in the gets a second chance to take a close up look at his life and find a way out the “hood”. After a drug deal gone wrong, Lil J is on the run and ends up hiding out in an abandoned building with a male squatter known only as Kelly. Kelly may not have much, but he does have one thing, a magical television which has the capability to help Lil J run back through his memories and his life so that he can really make out just where h [...]

    12. Walter Dean Myers is in a class of his own and this book is an interesting variation on his explorations of what it means to be young, black, and poor in America today. It will appeal more to readers who are interested in discussion than action since the entire book (except for remembered flashbacks) is a conversation between a young man who's been shot and is being hunted by the police and another young man who is more than mysterious and possibly not real. The topic of this conversation is whi [...]

    13. Dope SickBy: Walter Dean MyersDope Sick is about a young adult in New York who is trying to make a living for his family. While he is going from job interview to job interview he gets swept up in the drug game. Even though he doesn't do drugs, he often still finds himself in trouble. Eventually he has a run in with the police. I think this book was very good because it actually talked about specific moments in his life and why he was doing what he was doing. I would recommend this book to people [...]

    14. The book was great .I really enjoyed reading about Jeremy Dance and his interesting and confusing life .I find it tragic how he went through so much with his mother kinda being there but dealing with her own issues as well.He is stuck and does not know his next move as far as his life and what he is going to do with it.Part of him not having his life together makes him feel like he has no other option but drugs to turn to.

    15. I was very lost with this book because one minute they were talking about a man running from the cops then next minute he was in some man name kelly house looking at a tv with him on it showing how he can take steps back in his life to make things right.

    16. this book was amazing i think this is one of the books that i like the most the story was interesting. this book relates to the peaple that live in harsh places and whered thres violenceis book take you to the streets ofr new york and how people struggle in the geheeto

    17. I read this book for school with one of my credit recovery students for novel study. I was pleasantly surprised that we're both enjoying it even though our reader profiles are so different. Good book!

    18. A story of an inner city youth who's taken the wrong path. As usual, Myer adds a nice twist to make this one somewhat magical and exceedingly dramatic.

    21. “Dope Sick” by Walter Dean Myers, A first time author to me, is a great read for young teens. I personally enjoyed this book due to amount of twists and turns the book had. Keeping me on my toes the whole time. The book starts off with, Lil J the main character. Lil J is battling for his life, he is an addict and has a very trouble back story. Lil J was participating in illegal activities with his friend when the cops got called on them. The tide changes quickly when shots are fired and he h [...]

    22. It was a quick read, but I have a hard time believing that young adults will really get the message of this book. I added it to my list because some parents were trying to get it banned from local public schools, so I wanted to see what was so horrible about it. I don't think it's a horrible book at all - it's real life for some people, and I think it's really important for young adults to be fully life-aware.But because it's intended for younger readers, I really think the message could have be [...]

    24. I give this book a 4 star review because, in the beginning of the book it hooks you and you want to read more and more. But towards the middle of the book it gets boring. He just sits in one spot and doesn't move around and there's not a lot going on.

    25. I really like this book because i can strongly relate to it. I know a lot of people who was willing to sell drugs then get legal jobs because they said the money paste was to slow.

    26. I think it was a good story. A drug deal goes wrong and this dude name lil j made some bad decisions in life,And asked this person for help.
