    2. Adam, One Afternoon is a world of fable created with Calvino’s unerring precision on human reality. I always have discomfort with novels which sound inconclusive or end abruptly. For the same reason, I kept the book aside after reading the first two stories. On introspection, I realized my folly that human emotion, condition and thoughts do not have latitude. The breadth and depth of a cryptic memory may be infinite but in reality, the power of tragedy is that it pulls out an alternative reali [...]

    9. A varied set of short stories covering a time range from pre-war to post-war era. Most stories are grim and have death at the main role (e.g. One of the three is still alive), Some others read like middle-age literature (e.g. Crow Comes Last), some are comical (e.g. Desire in November). A cleverly hidden symbolism (e.g. in Argentine Ants) lurks beneath the surface of what looks like a straight and to-the-point prose. Although it is not my favourite Calvino, I enjoyed reading this collection.

    12. Italo Calvino is probably my favourite writer. This collection is one of his earliest volumes. Only his novel *The Path to the Spiders' Nests* and a few stories from the beginning of *Numbers in the Dark* predate the tales in this book.*Adam, One Afternoon* contains 21 stories, the first 20 of which were published as a collection in 1949, just three years after his first book appeared. The 21st story, 'The Argentine Ant' (one of Calvino's finest realistic short stories) was written in the early [...]

In qualche modo l'instabilità e l'or [...]

    14. I grew up on short stories, preferring them to novels. I especially loved Donald Barthelme, Raymond Carver, Jorge Luis Borges and this early collection of Calvino. The first twenty stories were originally published in Italy in 1949, as a larger collection of thirty stories under the title, 'The Crow Comes Last'. I'd love to know which are the ten stories left out of this 1957 collection. I'm guessing some may be published in 'Difficult Loves' a collection of eleven early stories but would love t [...]

Non so, proprio non so [...]

    17. Every short story collection - for me - has one stand-out story, and it this case it was "Father to Son". I read this collection some twenty years ago and have forgotten almost every other story contained within, remembering only that I vaguely enjoyed them at the time. However, "Father to Son" has remained seared into my brain for all time, because of its unbearable truth: that our children inherit from us many things - some of those things we would rather not bequeath them, but it is often bey [...]

    19. I liked these stories a lot. They take the form of tiny vignettes, full of detail and character. They range from the downright hilarious (Theft in a Cakeshop) to the chillingly surreal (A Judgement). Some I found a little less successful than others but generally they were varied and enjoyable.

    20. Short stories, ranging from country to city life, under the shadow of the war. Children playing only to come upon soldiers training, black market smugglers, and the poverty of the countryside. A curious mixture of realism and fancy.

    22. * Ambientes: Silvestre, campo de batalla.* Eventos: Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-45), Guerra partisana (1943-45).* Figuras recurrentes: Guerrillero/a, partisano/a, soldado granjero/a, soldado joven.

    25. from my 1985 notebook: beautifully turned stories. 'Last Comes the Crow' especially good - the young rifleman making the air straight lines for his bullets. Brutal tales of war.
