    1. Because I’m fascinated by characters such as Abraham Lincoln or his Secretary of State William Seward, and to a lesser extent some of the military leaders of the US Civil War, I thought a brief overview of the whole of that war might be useful. In other words, an account of the conflict in military terms, providing a kind of outline or skeleton for my continued reading of the political, moral and fundamental issues that led to war, and which the war moulded.Bruce Catton does that job admirably [...]

    2. Boy did it take me a while to get through this, and the urge to skip ahead to the battles we all know, or just look at the pictures and sidebars, was always present. The overall experience is spectacular. Engaging narrative, TONS of photograph, newspaper reproductions and cartoons, paintings, drawings done by soldiers and maps. But the "crown jewel" is detailed, full page, birds eye view of the battles, drawn in such a way as to guide you through each battle step by step. A great experience even i [...]

    3. Great history lessonI learned a lot from this book. Although I have read many books about the Civil War, both fiction and non, I found this book different from any of them in that the author wrote a lot about the politics going on on both sides. This helped me to imagine what it must have actually been like for the people living in those times. I was amazed thinking about how on earth our nation ever managed to survive.

    4. I have read several worthy and incredibly detailed sets of books about this, and even they have to be selective in what they cover. I enjoyed this because its analytical style got to the key points and also framed the war with more political aspects than i would normally think about. Wish it had been the first book I read about the war.

    5. Wonderful writing, and packed with photos and drawings. The maps of each battle were hard to read and follow, however, and the sheer amount and placement of photos and captions made it difficult to easily follow the text.

    6. Brings reason to an unreasonable time in our nation. The battles are all there but mostly as why they took place and the political consequences. A good cross between history and an interesting story.

    7. A very concise account of the war. This was useful as it helps to bring out the big picture of the flow of the struggle from beginning to end.
