    1. The Case Book of Emily Lawrence is a novel made up of a series of short stories, beginning in 1859, when the protagonist is 7 years old, following her through young adulthood, into maturity, and ending in 1895. Emily makes an unusual (in fact, unheard of at the time) choice of profession and becomes a detective. Each chapter describes a case in which she is involved. Taken together, they portray the development of an intelligent, determined woman who refuses to be confined by society's expectati [...]

    2. Three and a half stars for this book of related stories which are presented in a clever manner. Emily Lawrence, along with her husband Charles, runs Lawrence Research in late 1800s Washington, D.C. Through acute observation and newly evolving scientific research they provide detective services for a myriad of clients and sometimes even the wary local police. Each chapter or case (except for the very first one) is preceded by a letter from Emily to her family. These provide the personal history o [...]

    3. Like the Pinkertons, Lawrence Research conducts investigations for private clients in late 19th century Washington, D.C. But unlike its more famous competitor, this agency’s star detective is a woman—Emily Lawrence—who with her husband Charles, takes on a bevy of intriguing cases, including kidnapping, stolen artifacts, robberies, and murder. KB Inglee weaves all sorts of fascinating historic details into this series of stories without being the least bit tedious or pedantic (traits I have [...]

    4. A great book for mystery lovers---there's a new mystery in every chapter. (It is, after all, the case book study of a life as a detective.) The book begins with Emily as a child for one chapter, neatly setting the stage. Then, each chapter after that is another case of detection, most during a lifetime as co-owner with her husband of a detective agency. There are short connecting letters to Emily's sisters between chapters that follow her life. Gotta say, there's one inventive mind behind all th [...]

    5. I loved this book. It's a series of mysteries (the cases of Emily Lawrence) that occur within the story of Emily Lawrence's life. It takes place in the late 1800's.I loved the main character, Emily Lawrence. When I read the book, I felt like I was right there and things were happening. All the characters are well-created. They seem real. This is not a slow book. Things happen at a lively pace.I enjoyed reading the book and entering into Emily Lawrence's world, spending time with her.

    6. An interesting read--a collection of short stories and letters that covers Emily's entire career. My only complaint was that in several of the "cases" there were loose ends left unexplained. No doubt this is realistic, since Emily's part in these matters (except for one highly personal one) was over, but it was frustrating for me as a reader not to know how things turned out.
