    1. Recognize this Canadian $10 bill?If so, then you've (perhaps unknowingly) been acquainted with John A. MacDonald.Turns out that old guy whose face is on the money was NOT just Canada's first prime minister, he was also a sleuth and adventurer as a young boy. (At least, he is in Roderick Benns' YA novel for which this review is written)And what a novel! It's got everything including the proverbial kitchen sink contained within! Of course there's a mystery (like the first book in the series which [...]

    2. I received this book from First Reads, my first one!First I'd like to comment on how quickly I received the book. It only took ten days from the moment I was notified! Now on to the review! I have today right off the bat that I'm not the greatest at reviews, but here's my shot at it.I love to read historical fiction but recently, I haven't read any Canadian historical fiction. Usually I only read British or European historical fiction. Mostly because I'm enamoured by all things Victorian, but tha [...]

    3. Didn't like this one as much as the Diefenbaker novel, because the plot seemed a bit more unrealistic as far as historical content was concerned. Still, if I were to read it as straight up fiction, I'd probably give it the full 5 stars, as it was highly entertaining. There were a lot of adult themes in this book, such as (view spoiler)[ Sir. john A. blaming himself for the death of his younger brother at the hands of a servant, and the whole "I'm a bitter American who refuses to believe the War [...]

    4. This book got a four star rating because I appreciate what the author is trying to do: make Canadian history exciting for kiddies. A daunting task, it seems. John A. is certainly an interesting character in himself, and the setting (being five minutes down the road from me) is personally appealing. However, the shameless self-promotion at the back of the book was a little annoying, and if the author wants this to become a classroom staple, the text could benefit from some better editing. Note: M [...]

    5. An exciting story about John A. MacDonald's childhood. This would be a good supplement to a middle school Canadian history course.
